About Digital Tax Service

Digital Tax Service is an independent UK guidance and support service for HMRC's Making Tax Digital programme. We are not affiliated with HMRC or GOV.UK. Our purpose is to help sole traders, landlords and small businesses understand how MTD for Income Tax and MTD for VAT will affect them, and to make compliance practical rather than intimidating.

What we do

We publish plain-English guides, free tools and structured services covering eligibility, thresholds, deadlines, software selection, quarterly updates and HMRC's points-based penalty regime. Each page is written for a specific real-world question, sourced from current HMRC publications, and reviewed when policy changes.

Who we help

Self-employed sole traders, residential and furnished holiday let landlords, online sellers, tradespeople, freelancers and accountancy practices outsourcing MTD work. If you receive UK trading or property income above the qualifying thresholds, MTD for Income Tax will apply to you from April 2026, 2027 or 2028 depending on your income band.

Why independent matters

We do not sell software and we are not tied to a single vendor. Our software comparisons, bridging-tool recommendations and setup advice are based on HMRC's recognised software list and on what genuinely works for the size of business in front of us.
