The basics

What are company accounts — and who wants what?

Running a limited company means reporting to two different organisations, on two different timetables. Here is the whole picture, without the jargon.

Companies House

The public register of UK companies. It wants your annual accounts and your confirmation statement.

Accounts due 9 months after year end

HMRC

The tax authority. It wants your Corporation Tax return and the tax itself — separately from Companies House.

Different body, different deadlines

Corporation Tax

The tax your company pays on its profits, reported on a CT600 return that must agree with your accounts.

Payable 9 months + 1 day after year end

Confirmation statement

An annual check-in confirming directors, registered office, shareholders and people with significant control.

At least once every 12 months · £34 fee

VAT

Required once VAT-taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months. Voluntary registration is possible below that.

Filed digitally under MTD

PAYE & payroll

Needed if the company pays anyone a salary — including you as a director — or provides benefits.

Real Time Information filed each payday

Dormant companies

A company with no significant accounting transactions. Simpler accounts, but you still have to file them.

Dormant does not mean 'do nothing'

Pension duties

Every employer has auto-enrolment duties with The Pensions Regulator, even if nobody joins a scheme.

Declaration of compliance required

How it works

Six simple steps — and we do five of them

No spreadsheets to wrestle with and no forms to decipher. Here is exactly what happens.

  1. Step 1

    Tell us about your company

Your company name or number, year end and a quick summary of what it does. Two minutes, and we take it from there.

  2. Step 2

    Send us a few documents

Bank statements, sales and expenses, and your HMRC references. We tell you exactly what is needed — nothing more.

  3. Step 3

    We prepare everything

Your accounts and Corporation Tax return are prepared to the correct statutory format and checked line by line.

  4. Step 4

    You review and approve

We walk you through the figures in plain English. Nothing is filed until you are happy and have signed off.

  5. Step 5

We file with HMRC & Companies House

Both submissions handled for you, with confirmation sent back so you have proof everything landed on time.

  6. Step 6

Relax — we watch the calendar

We track every future deadline for your company and remind you well before each one. No more brown-envelope surprises.

What we need

Three details to get you started

If you cannot find one of these, do not worry — there is a way to recover every single one, and we will help you do it.

Missing everything? That is genuinely fine. Call us and we will rebuild your records from scratch.

Find your company

Don’t know your company number? Type your company name and check it on the official register — it takes seconds.

Opens the free Companies House register in a new tab. Copy the 8-digit company number from there — or just tell us the name and we’ll find it for you.

Secure document upload

Our encrypted client portal is being finalised. In the meantime, start your enquiry and we’ll send you a secure link to send documents over safely.

We never ask for passwords or card details by email.

About us

Who you’ll be working with

Digital Tax Service is a trading name of Shreeve Hallam Jones, a tax practice based in Sheffield. We work with limited companies across the UK — from brand-new and dormant companies through to established trading businesses.

What sets the team apart is who is behind it. Our staff include specialists who have previously worked as Tax Inspectors for HMRC and in senior tax roles within global accountancy firms. That matters when something goes wrong: we have seen these cases from HMRC’s side of the desk, so we know what they look for and how to put things right.

Day to day it means straight answers, work that stands up to scrutiny, and a fixed fee agreed before we start.
