What a UTR is
A UTR is the 10-digit number HMRC uses to identify you for Self Assessment. You are given one automatically when you register, or when you set up a limited company for Corporation Tax. You need it to file a return, make payments, and to identify yourself to HMRC about your tax.
Where to look for it
GOV.UK lists these places to check first, for an individual or sole trader:
- Your Personal Tax Account, online through GOV.UK
- The HMRC app
- Previous tax returns and other documents from HMRC, such as statements, tax calculations or payment reminders
If you run a partnership, trust or company
Organisations should check past tax returns and HMRC correspondence in the same way. A limited company can request its Corporation Tax UTR online, and HMRC posts it to the company's registered office address, so make sure that address is current.
If you still cannot find it
GOV.UK's guidance is to contact HMRC directly if none of the usual places have it. Have your National Insurance number and other identifying details ready, since HMRC needs to confirm who you are before giving out a UTR.
If you have never had one
If you have never registered for Self Assessment, you do not yet have a UTR to find. You need to register instead, after which HMRC posts your UTR — allow around 15 days for it to arrive, longer if you are abroad.
